April 14, 2015 By Roger

So you wanna make a mobile app? Excellent! Welcome to the exciting world of app development!

There are a lot of great reasons to create your own app. Perhaps you have a killer idea or a need which no one has created an app to fulfill.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the large sums of money independent developers have earned in just months, with just a few employees.

Incredible Success Stories

The 13 employees at Instagram shared a $100 million stake when Instagram was bought by Facebook.

Finding A Look

Donkey Kong Snow Level
One of the great games of all time, Donkey Kong Country on the Super Nintendo

Donkey Kong Country (DKC) was released on November 21, 1994 for the Super Nintendo system. I bought it the week it was released and was absolutely enthralled.

One level in particular, “Snow Barrel Blast” still stands out in my mind as perhaps the perfect combination of beautiful graphics, fabulous level design, spot-on gameplay, and rich, atmospheric music.

Cross-cultural iOS Apps

February 13, 2015 By Roger

I’m incredibly surprised that one of the most enjoyable development tasks for our upcoming iOS app has been localization.

What is Localization?

To many, the term localization is defined as translating an app into another language. Yes, translation is part of localization, but translation alone would be internationalization as opposed to localization.

Streamside Software’s Next App

February 10, 2015 By Roger

We’re incredibly busy working to bring our newest iOS app to market. We’re somewhat stingy with details at this time, but I can tell you four exciting details about this project:

  1. It’s a game for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.
  2. It features a beloved H. P. Lovecraft character.
  3. It will be translated into several languages.
  4. We are working hard to support the Apple Watch!

Personally, point number 4 excites me the most. We hope to have the game ready in time for the launch of the Apple Watch.

Stay tuned.

Cocos2D-Swift 3.0 and SpriteBuilder

Sprite Builder Logo
Everything old is new again. Apportable revolutionizes Cocos2D development with the integration of the SpriteBuilder editor.

Here I go again. Same framework, new features.

When we created Spirit Story Box* in 2013, I used the Cocos2D game engine to handle the graphics and particle effects. It was a great choice to pull off some of the eye candy, but integrating native iOS views (like the tableview  and carousel) proved to be a tricky marriage between two different methodologies.

And So It Goes…

December 4, 2014 By Roger

Every blog has to start somewhere. This is my small beginning. This blog will present the personal side to my journey as an entrepreneur. Here I give the straight, behind-the-scenes stories.

My wife Jill and I dove headlong into pursuing our business ventures full-time. No more cush job to support us. We are all in and determined to succeed no matter what.

People ask if I am scared. The truth is, no. I’m not.

What I was really afraid of was getting to the end of my life and realizing that I had never lived, never known what we could have truly achieved if we had faced our fears.

This past month has been a slow start, but we’re in motion now. We’re in the water. We’re starting to swim — not just tread water, and it feels amazing!

Roger wrote his first commercial software program in 1988 while he was still in college. He's had two long careers as a graphics designer/coordinator with a small magazine, and as lead software engineer/Oracle DBA/Linux and Windows system administrator with Indiana University. In November 2014, he left I.U. to focus on Streamside Software, the company he co-founded with his wife, Jill.
In 2016 Roger joined Attain, LLC providing iOS development for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) under the CDC. In 2018 Roger was awarded the Bullard-Sherwood award (Technology Category) for his integral contributions to the redesign and development of the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool iOS app.

Where I’m Located

Streamside Software, LLC is located just north of Indianapolis in beautiful Carmel, Indiana, (with colocations in local coffee shops of course).
