2018 Attain Way Achievement Award Winner

May 24, 2019 By Roger

Attain Way Achievement Award

In December 2018, along with my colleagues, I was privileged to receive the first quarter Attain Way Achievement Award from my employer, Attain LLC for my substantial contributions to the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool.

According to Attain:

The Attain Way Achievement Award recognizes employees for their outstanding service. This internal, quarterly, peer-nominated/peer-reviewed award program honors individuals who go above and beyond to demonstrate an exceptional commitment our core values, and make significant contributions to our clients, our business, and the communities in which we live and work.

This was certainly a team effort, and I am deeply grateful to Attain for their recognition.

If you work in the IT field and are interested working for Attain, I highly recommend them. Please reach out to me at streamside7@hotmail.com.

In 2018 I was the proud recipient of the prestigious NIOSH Bullard-Sherwood Award for my integral contributions to the redesign and iOS development of the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool App.

I am deeply humbled by this award and hopeful that my work might make an impact in the safety and health of the American workers.

OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool

July 30, 2018 By Roger

In 2016 I began working for Attain, LLC as a contract employee. My first project for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was to redesign and develop the Heat Safety Tool which was originally developed/contracted by OSHA.

The app provides potentially life-saving information and heat index prediction to protect the lives of American workers.

The OSHA version of the app had some amazing content and functionality which I felt was hidden under the limited user interface. Working alongside my fellow contractors and Federal employees, we set out to drastically redesign and improve upon the interface as well as add hour-by-hour prediction information.

The success of the app has been overwhelming. Not only does this government app preform well against commercial weather apps in the App Store charts, in just one year it has received a quarter of a million downloads and has even been featured on the Weather Channel.

iOS/watchOS App: Cthulhu vs. Your Mom Gold

January 14, 2016 By Roger

iPhone-watch-Pics_1024

The day the watchOS 2 version of Cthulhu vs. Your Mom Gold was released, Apple chose to feature it in the “Great Apps and Games for watchOS 2” section of the Apple Watch App Store. As of this writing, it is still being featured.

Cthulhu vs. Your Mom Gold was the realization of our goal to deliver a great gaming experience for the Apple watchOS platform. This was also the first app of ours to be localized into multiple languages (Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, UK English, US English).

This was also our first game to support Game Center achievements.

I’ve found the title and tag line of the game to be incredibly memorable. It always gets a laugh when I tell people the title, and surprisingly the humor translates to other languages. Also memorable is the promotional video I created that uses the amazing vocal talents of Ken Scott:

iOS App: Spirit Story Box

January 14, 2016 By Roger

Spirit Story Box was the first iOS App released by our fledgling company, Streamside Software. I created it (with encouragement and advice from my wife Jill) in my spare time while working for Indiana University. We released it in early July, 2013.

On August 8th, it shot up in the App Store rankings reaching number 52 overall in the US, and number 4 overall in the UK, and it has been featured in the Huffington Post, USA Today Online, The Daily Mail, and other major media outlets.

It still ranks in the top 100 entertainment apps several times a year.

Web Comic/iOS Blog

January 14, 2016 By Roger

I started cartooning for my high school newspaper. I suppose this is the activity for which I am most remembered by my classmates.

This past year I rekindled my love of cartooning and created a Web Comic/Developer Blog called NSBliss which chronicles my life as an Apple developer.

Check it out at NSBliss.com or in Apple News under NSBliss.

Logo Design

January 14, 2016 By Roger

I love creating logos for companies. I think what makes it so satisfying is that once a logo is finished, it kind of takes on a life of its own. It becomes an old friend that you run into in the strangest of places.

I remember walking through the Indianapolis International Airport and coming upon a Starmaster marine engine in a plexiglass case and thinking, “Oh my gosh! That’s my logo on that engine.” There it was, cast in steel!

The Teddy’s Burger Joint logo holds a special place in my heart, because I received a MacBook in return for my work on that project. I then used that MacBook to start a new business.

Filmmaking:

I have studied filmmaking and started a small studio in 2013 called Two Streams Films with my wife, Jill. I am currently on hiatus from my filmmaking projects but still love to film an occasional time-lapse or promotional video.

I’ve got a Golden Ticket! WWDC 2015

April 18, 2015 By Roger

I'm going to WWDC!
I’m going to WWDC!

I was seriously, I kid you not, dreaming about golden tickets while I napped at around 4:30pm this afternoon. Tuesday I had submitted my registration to attend Apple’s WWDC 2015 conference in San Francisco (June 8-12). Acceptance (or rejection) of my submission was now up to Apple’s lottery process.

That would explain the golden ticket dreams I guess.

I awoke with one thought in my head, “Apple said to let my bank know that my card might be charged for the registration fee.”

How To Make A Successful App (Part Two)

April 15, 2015 By Roger

As promised, I will get into some of the nitty gritty details of creating a successful app in this post, but as you can imagine, I won’t be able to cover everything.

However, I will complete this series of posts as quickly as possible and give you as many resources as possible to turn to.

I realize we haven’t even scratched the surface of what exactly it takes to create an app, such as what language to use, what design tools to use, etc., etc.

I assure you I will get to those, but I need to continue to give you a broader overview first.

The Dream

Let’s start with an exercise.

Many people approach the idea of creating an app with the following belief, “If I create an app and price it at one dollar, if 1,000,000 people buy it, I’ll be a millionaire.”

Roger wrote his first commercial software program in 1988 while he was still in college. He's had two long careers as a graphics designer/coordinator with a small magazine, and as lead software engineer/Oracle DBA/Linux and Windows system administrator with Indiana University. In November 2014, he left I.U. to focus on Streamside Software, the company he co-founded with his wife, Jill.
In 2016 Roger joined Attain, LLC providing iOS development for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) under the CDC. In 2018 Roger was awarded the Bullard-Sherwood award (Technology Category) for his integral contributions to the redesign and development of the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool iOS app.

Where I’m Located

Streamside Software, LLC is located just north of Indianapolis in beautiful Carmel, Indiana, (with colocations in local coffee shops of course).
